THE GRADUATE!!

Burkeley Graduated from High School TODAY!!!

Honestly, it was a proud Parent Moment!!! (if you read my last post I wasnt so sure if I would feel this way)  It was fun to remember back when I first met this boy.  He was probably about 10 mths old.  Even then, he loved his DAD.  At the graduation it was apparent that he loved ALL of us.

Being a STeP MoM

(this is REALLY rambley, bare with me and it will not be grammatically correct- mostly because my mind does not think grammatically correct)

Being a step mom is hard.  Being a step mom is awkward. I have always said that the situation of being a step mom to Burkeley is the best of any step family situation.  When I married Steve, Burke was just a few months old.  I knew when we started dating that he had a son. I knew it would be hard.  I knew it would be difficult. Burke's mom has always been so great to "work" with.  She has never denied us visitation rights nor has she discouraged relationships. We all get along great.  No, we are not best friends.  We have just made it work. Plus Burke is a GREAT kid.

Last night we attended Berkeley's Seminary Graduation! What an awesome accomplishment!!!  I say this coming from the perspective that I did not graduated from LDS seminary. Thats a totally different story...Anyway, we were very proud parents.  But, in all reality, we had nothing to do with the fact that he graduated from seminary. In a few days we will attend is High School Graduation. And, once again, we really didnt have much to do with the fact that he is graduating from High School (yes, I did graduate from H.S.) I felt awkward at the graduation.  I felt like a by-standard instead of a parent. We were not there on a daily basis to ask him all the right questions at all the tough times.  We were not there when he was sick and needed his back rubbed.  We were not there on the days he wanted to cry when life got really hard.  Nor were we there to celebrate when he got an A on a quiz or earned a smiley face on a spelling test..  It was weird for me to be there.  Don't get me wrong, I wanted to be there.  I just felt out of place.

I really tried hard to be involved with Burke as he grew up.  He came to our house a bunch,  I wanted to make sure we were doing everything we could to have him grow up and know that we love him.  Burke is a lot like Steve...quiet and stubborn.  He will not volunteer any information.  And we just didn't have much control over ANYTHING.  We just had distant input.  So, as he was growing up I just tried to make sure Steve called his elementary teachers and that we  checked his grades on power school.  We didnt make the decisions about what time he needed to be home on school nights,  We didn't send him to his room when he had an attitude. Lets just put it this way...we didn't do that hard parenting stuff.

So, when it comes to celebrating these milestones it is just weird.  I felt weird.  I even leaned over to Steve and asked him if he felt weird.  He said "We have been doing this for HOW many years???"  We didn't say a word to his mom or his step dad.  Yes, we did smile.  After the ceremony Burke would come visit with us in our little family circle and then go over to his mom's family circle then back again to ours. Plus a few visits with his girlfriend. I felt like an invader to their proud moment.

Being his step mom has been interesting.  I wanted us to be involved in EVERY choice, decision and activity that Burke made and did.  It took me a long while to realize that this was just not feasible.  I had this dream that we would co-parent Burke.  Honestly what was I thinking... Parenting a child is hard with two different parenting styles but add in two step parents and it makes the non custodial parents almost out of the picture when it comes to decisions.  I had to realize that I was not in control of anything.  I could give say my two cents to Steve and then he had to do what he wanted with it.  I had to take a step back and just be me.  Not the MOM or even the step mom.  I had to take myself and the role I thought I needed to play, out of the equation.  Maybe that is why I felt so uncomfortable last night.

Austin is a great kid!  He is a excellent student.  I never have to worry about his school work because he always gets it done without being asked.  Most people think he is even tempered BUT most people do not see him interacting with his brothers.  Actually, he is a silently stubborn and will retaliate at the most unexpected times. This year for his birthday I surprised him with a new cell phone.  He wanted a motorcycle but I think I made up for it.  He will be going to the intermediate school next year and I wanted to make sure I could get a hold of him.  Yes, I am a control freak!  But honestly, I have been with this kid day in and day out for the past 11 years!!  I have been able to walk across the hall and peek in on him at school for the past 6 years. I just want to be able to check in on my boy!!!  So the phone was actually for ME!!

I love you Aust.  I am proud of you.  Keep up all the hard work in school.  Remember to be nice to your brothers!

There once was a mom...

I had a few excerpts from the Luke's mothers day story posted here.  But then I decided that writing his WHOLE story would be much better.  So here you go...

Once upon a time there were 4 boys and a mom and a dad.  They loved their boys but then they kinda did not.  They bought so much food because the dad  thought the world would end.  The dad thought the bad guys would come and steal the food.  So the Dad bought so many guns and bullets.  Their boys names were Luke, Austin, Tyler, and Nate.  Their mothers mom lived in Las Vegas.  The mother married a guy named Steve.  The mom loved TV and cleaning the house.  Her favorite TV show is The View.  She teaches school and the dad is a firefighter. She has lots of friends.  The mothers name is RACHELLE.  The End

Ding Dong.....

I have been trying to think of an awesome creative way to post my feelings right now. I have debated if I should take the serious side. I have wondered if boasting and cheering would be crass. I contemplated if taking a political- in- your -face stance would be appropriate. But, when I came across the following post I knew immediately that this was the way to say it...

Just a little diddy I modified from a familiar classic. I think the mood of this piece fits the general mood of all who are enemies of hate and terror, and all who love peace and justice, because after nearly 10 years of hateful acts of violence and terror preying on the weak or unsuspecting, the "wicked" Osama bin Laden is dead.

Bet he didn't think we'd pursue him this tirelessly and this doggedly. I bet he thought he was getting away with something; but really, all it got him was a life of fearful hiding and at last a swift bullet in the head, courtesy of Jack Bauer, a.k.a. the US NAVY Seals who courageously and expertly executed a well-planned operation.

God bless the USA!

Hope you enjoy it...

Americans (and all freedom-lovers)
Ding Dong! Bin Laden's dead. Which bin Laden? Osama bin Laden!
Ding Dong! The Wicked bin Laden's dead.
Wake up - sleepy head, rub your eyes, get out of bed.
Wake up, Osama bin Laden's dead.
He's gone where the villains go,
Below - below - below, Yo-ho
Let's open up and sing and ring the bells out.
Ding Dong' the merry-oh, sing it high, sing it low.
Let them know
Osama bin Laden's dead!

President
As Leader of America, In the Country of the Land of The Free,
I welcome you most regally.

Attourney
But we've got to verify it legally, to see

President
To see?

Attourney
If he

President
If he?

Attourney
Is morally, ethic'lly

Father No.1
Spiritually, physically

Father No. 2
Positively, absolutely

Americans
Undeniably and reliably Dead

Coroner
As Coroner I must aver,
I thoroughly examined the monster.
And he's not only merely dead,
he's really most sincerely dead.

President
Then this is a day of Independence
For all Americans and their descendants
Yes, let the joyous news be spread
The wicked Old bin Landen at last is dead!

Thanks Daniel (Addie's Friend)
