Today I was reading aloud to my class. It was right after lunch. The kids had just played outside in the 45 degree windy weather, therefore, their little noses were running. I encourage the kids to just get up and get a tissue when they need to blow or wipe their nose. Ok, back to...I was reading aloud to my class. So, seriously, kid after kid got up to wipe or blow their nose. I was really trying to ignore it but after the eighth kid got up or maybe the fifth kid got up for the second time, I stopped my story and nicely said, "That is enough getting up to blow your nose. Get a tissue and sit down. Do not get back up while I am reading my story. It is extremely distracting to me and to your classmates." Also, it is important to realize that the tissue box is right by my rocking chair. And, the trash can is situated close by. So, when the kids get up to blow their nose they wipe and blow RIGHT in front of the whole class. Everyone is focused on the student not ME. I know your thinking that I should just move my tissues to another place but I don't want too. By the way, I am reading The BFG by Roald Dahl (I love this book but I really don't think my kids are quite old enough to get the humor in it.) Back to the story... my students quickly obeyed and settled right down and began focusing on the story.
About 5 minutes pass by of totally uninterrupted reading and I get a text message. I ignore the message until a point in the story where I feel I can take a little break. I pick up my phone and read the message...from YOU Abbie...then I proceed to tell my class to hold on a few minutes while I tell this mom that I would love to take her daughter home. (I offered, in an earlier text message) Then it happens. Every teachers nightmare...the one where your students catch you doing something totally inappropriate and you KNOW it. One of the boys in the class says... Um-mm, Mrs. Christian, you told us not to distract your reading and YOU just distracted our listening by texting!" I answer, "You are right. I'm sorry." I also hear "Just ignore it!"
CRAP!!
